Baagkok, August 1998: IHRDC organized its International Gas Business Workshop in August for Unocal Thailand in Bangkok. The workshop is a five-day management program which covers the full range of the gas industry: from early exploration to market development. With the rapid expansion of the international gas industry, Unocal Thailand discovered a compelling need for a gas business management development program to bring their managers up to date on current technology, economics and business practices of this rapidly changing industry. IHRDC President, Dr. David A.T. Donohue, IHRDC Project Manager, Maher Habbal, and Consultant, Richard A. Norman, taught the course to twenty-three managers from Unocal Thailand. The instructional format consisted of a careful balance of lectures and a practical business simulation workshop, where participants made actual technical and financial decisions as they explored for and developed gas reserves in the fictitious Republic of Singnam. At the end of the program, a Manager from Unocal stated, "Great program! I learned more in one week than in the last five years of basic courses combined!" IHRDC offers the International Gas Business Workshop, as well as the International Petroleum Business Workshop, the International Power Project Development Workshop and the International Hydrocarbon Marketing Workshop, all over the world on a private, in-house basis. These workshops can be tailored to meet each companys specific needs. Please contact IHRDC for further information. For Information: Dr. David Donohue

Boston, February 1998: A group of senior managers of the National Oil and Gas Company of Kazakstan - KAZAKHOIL - will be visiting Boston, Caracas, and Kuala Lumpur in February as part of a management program and study tour that is being organized by International Human Resources Development Corporation (IHRDC) of Boston, under the auspices of the World Bank. The program will begin in Boston on February 15 with three day lecture-workshop sessions devoted to strategic planning, leadership, measurement of performance and the continuous learning organization. Some of the sessions will be devoted to the important role that national oil companies plan in todays international oil industry. The senior managers asked that the study tour, to be scheduled immediately after the Boston session, include visits to forward-thinking national oil companies. IHRDC selected Petroleos de Venezuela and Petronas because of the scope of their activities within their own countries and their international initiatives. The senior managers of each of these two companies have agreed to host the delegation for their tree-day stay in each country (see attached list of delegates). The sessions with PDVSA will begin on February 18 and those with Petronas on February 24. Background on KAZAKHOIL Kazakstan is the largest of the former Soviet republics. It is located in Central Asia on the east side of the Caspian Sea and has significant reserves of energy resources. According to the forecasts of international experts, in the next few years Kazakstan should move from 26th place, which it currently occupies, to 6th on the list of world hydrocarbon producers. KAZAKHOIL, formed in 1997, is the largest oil and gas company operating in the Republic of Kazakstan. During the first half of 1997, enterprises of the company produced more than 10 million tons (70 million barrels or approximately 200,000 barrels/day) of oil, 1 million tons of condensate and 2.732 BCM of gas. The companys aggregate volume of oil reserves is more than 1.5 billion tons (10.5 billion barrels). At present, 77 fields are under development. The largest of these fields according to established reserves are Tengiz, Karachaganak, Kenbai, Ahanazhol, Zhetybai, Kalamkas, Karazhanbas, Uzen, and Kumkol. Their aggregate reserves are 4.480 billion tons of oil, 1,448 trillion cubic meters of gas and 881 million tons of gas condensate. Projections for an increase in established oil reserves by the 2005 amount to 15 billion tons (105 billion barrels). The republics most prospective projects will involve development of Kazakstans sector of the Caspian offshore, where projected reserves of liquid hydrocarbons are estimated at 10 billion tons (70 billion barrels) and investments in developing offshore fields should total $150 billion. KAZAKHOIL is a participant in the largest oil transportation project on the territory of the former USSR - The Caspian Pipeline Consortium. At present, this project has entered the implementation stage. The volume of exports will amount to 28 million tons of oil annually, including some 20 million tons from Kazakstan. In the future, the volume of exports will be increased in stages up to 67 million tons per year. As a result of the large scale privatization of the oil and gas sector being carried out in Kazakstan, KAZAKHOIL has become partners with major international firms. On the whole, approximately $2.3 B have been invested in projects in which the company participates. Companies from the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, France, Turkey, and other countries are the main source of such investments. For information: Cherry C.K.
